Would like to know how often the island has been evacuated due to hurricanes or any other reasons. Also, is there documentation showing the success of evacuations and issues that have or need to be addressed. Thank you, John D. Not for a long time. Last major devastating hurricane was in 1893 — you might say we’re due.

I evacuated Daufuskie Island due to Hurricane Hugo in September 1989 and Hurricane Floyd in September 1999. Both storms brushed this area with minor damage (mostly trees) and minimal flooding. Our leading challenge will be communications and getting resources to Daufuskie Island after a disaster.
